Sharon Jones, Ceramics
Sharon Jones is an artist, engineer and entrepreneur. Born and raised in Seattle, WA, she holds bachelors and masters degrees in Ceramic and Materials Science Engineering from the University of Washington. During her 18 years in research, her ideas led to a US Patent for Corning, Inc. and multiple Invention Disclosure Awards at Hughes Aircraft. Desiring a change in career, Sharon started SJ Studios with the intention of creating and selling handmade decorative ceramic tiles. As part of her learning, she joined a construction crew working as a tile setter’s helper for one month followed by two years in the International Brick and Allied Craftworkers’ trade school learning how to install tile. Sharon continued to develop her craft of making handmade tiles while working as an installer and tile sales associate. Designing and creating tiles and her work with the building trades, etc., satisfy both her technical and artistic passions.
Her recent accomplishments include the completion of a collaborative project for the City of Anderson, SC (Church Street Heritage Mural, 2017) and a commission for a small mosaic for the Presidential Suite at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia, SC (also 2017). She has been on South Carolina’s Roster of Approved Artists since 2009 and has earned a Merit Award from the Anderson Artists Guild.
