Jake Dueland, Metal Sculpture
I was born in Colorado and was raised in Cheyenne, Wyoming until the age of 16, when we moved to Hutto, Texas. After high school, I attended welding school at SCC in Milford, Nebraska. After graduating, I took a job at a company called Tuttle in Friend, Nebraska, where I worked until my wife and I were married.
My first experience with welding came with helping my uncle on his farm on his ranch in Nebraska. As a kid I loved playing with Legos, so playing with and building things came naturally as I started welding. Working for Tuttle, I would always notice cool shapes and scrap metal that the company would throw away. My art work started as digging those scraps out of the dumpster and giving them new life as yard art for my aunts and mother. As I progressed in my art ability, people began to suggest I start selling some of my sculptures. That’s when I started to search out galleries and shows.
I have been professionally welding for 10 years and making art for four years.
